For individuals with *S*~*p*~ = 0, *σ*~1~ = 0, and *σ*~2~ = 0 in 99% of the cases, while for individuals with *S*~*p*~ \> 0, there was an average of *S*~*p*~ = 5 gametocytes per field (*σ*~1~ ≅ 0.1, *σ*~2~ ≅ 0.3). The coefficients of variation reached similar values when the number of gametocytes in microscopy field was lower (*n* = 10). The coefficient of variation *σ*~1~ represents, therefore, the amount of variation due to the randomization of sampling and/or development of gametocyte stage, while *σ*~2~ is the variation due to the limit of detection.
